What the maternal health crisis looks like in alabama

In a state where many emphasize their commitment to safeguarding all lives, Black women face a significantly higher risk of maternal mortality, about five times more than their White counterparts. While politicians debate over abortion restrictions, the health hazards associated with childbirth in rural areas are growing.

This project, created with Black birth workers in Alabama, sheds light on the fragmented landscape of reproductive healthcare in the state. Through images and narratives, it provides an intimate portrayal of Black women in alabama, offering a counter-narrative for a community that has been historically overlooked, silenced, and marginalized.
